To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Rogers brand, this legendary brand, inextricably linked to the LS3/5A, has launched the highly commemorative “LS3/5A 75th Anniversary Edition” and “LS3/5A SE Diamond Jubilee 75th Anniversary Special Edition.” Besides celebrating the company’s 75th anniversary, these models also pay tribute to the illustrious history of this top-tier bookshelf speaker, and represent a new attempt to pursue excellence within a classic framework.

Original Lineage, Expert Support

In fact, the LS3/5A’s popularity has never waned. Even today, its name is still frequently mentioned in audiophile circles. Over the past decade, various manufacturers have continued to release reissues of the LS3/5A, with Rogers, the brand with the original lineage, being the most prominent. Back in 2008, Rogers re-produced a limited edition of the LS3/5A to commemorate its 60th anniversary, which received considerable acclaim in the market. However, the most enthusiastic response came from the 2018 70th Anniversary Edition, overseen by the influential figure Andy Whittle, which truly impressed.

Exceptional Materials Highlight Prestige
This re-release includes the LS3/5A 75th Anniversary Edition and the even more advanced LS3/5A SE Diamond Jubilee 75th Anniversary Special Edition (hereinafter referred to as LS3/5A 75th SE), both limited to 150 pairs worldwide. We are reviewing the LS3/5A 75th SE version. While the SE version’s appearance is similar to the 75th Anniversary Edition, closer inspection reveals several differences, the most significant being the enhanced internal components. The LS3/5A 75th SE’s cabinet is constructed from 12mm thick birch plywood, reinforced with beech wood strips along the edges, and finished with a natural teak veneer. The manufacturer states that the entire cabinet is made in the UK. Furthermore, the SE version features a uniquely numbered, gold-plated nameplate on the back, highlighting its exceptional status. The front baffle is made from a special composite laminate material called “Panzaholz” (bulletproof wood). This composite material is formed by pressing hardwood veneers and synthetic resin together at high temperatures, resulting in an exceptionally strong texture with near-metal strength and vibration damping capabilities. This effectively enhances the clarity of the mid-low frequencies, allowing the LS3/5A 75th SE to faithfully reproduce the classic BBC monitor acoustic characteristics while also offering delicate and precise musical details.

In addition to the classic nylon Tygan dust cover, the brand logo is adorned with a gold-plated “Rogers” logo. The wiring terminals feature WBT-0765 CU pure copper binding posts for bi-wire connections, facilitating wiring and enhancing sound clarity. Another highlight of the SE version is its crossover section; while maintaining the original parameters and specifications, key resistors have been replaced with higher-quality components to improve the precision of the sonic texture.

The midrange is full and rich. Using the Cyrus 40 series 40 ST streaming player as the source, coupled with a 40 AMP amplifier and a 40 PSU external power supply, and Audience Ohno speaker cables, the LS3/5A 75th SE originally came with a pair of solid copper jumpers. However, during the listening test, I opted to replace them with a pair of Audio Note AN-LEXUS LX jumpers, which significantly improved the clarity of the entire frequency range. The agent also sent a pair of Rogers LS3/5A tripods, notable for using the same Panzaholz baffle wood as the LS3/5A 75th SE, making the combination even more seamless.

Playing “Your Name, My Surname” from “Jacky Cheung 15,” this version lacks the grand and majestic arrangement of the original, instead offering a clean and warm ambiance. A guitar and a few harmonies simply and directly convey delicate emotions. The subtle details of Jacky Cheung’s vocals are rendered flawlessly on the LS3/5A 75th SE, capturing the nuances of breath control, the slight vibrations in his throat, and even the texture of his lips opening and closing. This 2000 recording perfectly preserves Jacky Cheung’s signature warm texture and velvety smoothness in his voice. Playing these vocals on the LS3/5A 75th SE is effortless; the midrange is full and solid, energetic yet unforced, showcasing detail and richness. The transitions in volume and intonation are presented naturally and smoothly, and the harmonies and vocals reveal a three-dimensional layer and depth.
