Hi-Fi Choice Review | Chord Company PhonoARAY Turntable Grounding System

One of the most noise-sensitive components in a turntable system is the faint signal from the cartridge. This prompted the Chord Company to develop its PhonoARAY turntable grounding system.

Many similar devices operate in parallel to avoid introducing filters into the signal path. However, since many turntables need to be grounded to the phono preamp or preamp input stage, the PhonoARAY takes a different approach: the turntable is grounded to the phono preamp input stage or preamp through this device. Inside this surprisingly heavy PhonoARAY is a hand-wound, high-current series filter connected to two terminals. Also included is the company’s ARAY system, connected in parallel, providing an effective dual virtual grounding system for the turntable and phono preamp input stages. The connection is achieved through two high-quality 4mm horn-style terminals, accepting both banana plugs and Y-plugs. The PhonoARAY is housed in a robust, machined aluminum housing for excellent electrical and acoustic isolation. The housing is filled with resin and features two lightweight decoupling isolation feet to reduce micro-noise. The PhonoARAY connects between the turntable or tonearm’s ground terminal and the phono preamp’s input ground terminal, and includes a 500mm shielded grounding cable for connecting the device to the phono preamp’s input ground.

Experience of a Wide Soundstage
I conducted a “before and after” listening test, connecting the PhonoARAY between a Vertere MG-1 turntable and a tube phono preamp. The final piece of Rimsky-Korsakov’s *Scheherazade*, performed by the National Symphony Orchestra, sounded more refined and relaxed, with a wider and deeper soundstage.

For jazz, I played “Top Of My Feet” from Lyder Roed Quintet’s *Upside Down* album. After using the PhonoARAY, the bass of this swing track was tighter and more rhythmic, and it felt more realistic in my listening room.

PhonoARAY appears to significantly improve sound quality. We highly recommend it if you’re looking for the best performance from a high-end vinyl playback system.
