Recently, we revisited Hong Kong’s first owner of the SME Model 8 turntable and installed the long-awaited Chord Company Sarum T tonearm cable for him. This upgrade was far more than just a component swap—it was a complete transformation of the auditory experience.
From Confidence to Delight: A Blind Upgrade Based on Trust
When we first installed the SME Model 8 for this customer, he compared our backup Chord Company EpicX tonearm cable with his original cable on-site and was immediately impressed by its performance. Even though he had never heard the higher-end Sarum T in person, he confidently decided to upgrade, trusting in the technical prowess of Chord Company.
Installation & Instant Sonic Improvement: Pitch-Black Background, Surging Detail
The installation went smoothly, and the Sarum T delivered an immediate and striking improvement as soon as the system was powered on. Paired with the DS Audio optical cartridge, the musical background became incredibly dark and quiet, with subtle musical details emerging from the depth—layered, dynamic, and highly resolved.
The customer’s integrated amplifier is the Audio Note 300B, known for its warm, captivating tonal character. With the Sarum T, the system delivered steady, powerful performance during large-scale passages from Carmen, with exceptional sonic balance. The violin lines were crisp and articulate, with realistic bowing texture, while the full scale and impact of the orchestra behind were preserved, creating a wide, coherent soundstage.
Lifelike Recreation: Immersive, Visceral Sound
Playing the live recording Bill Evans – Waltz for Debby, the Sarum T showcased outstanding spatial reconstruction. Ambience and subtle audience reactions were clearly discernible; the Double bass performance felt vivid and lifelike, faithfully reproducing the musician’s emotion and the atmosphere of the live venue, drawing listeners into a deeply immersive experience.
After listening, the customer stated that the sonic improvement brought by the Sarum T was well worth its price, exceeding even his original expectations.
The Technology Behind It: Why Sarum T Delivers Such Performance
Positioned in Chord Company’s mid-to-high-end range, the Sarum T inherits the essence of the brand’s flagship technologies. It uses the same high-purity silver-plated polished oxygen-free copper conductors as its top-tier models, paired with the exclusive Taylon dielectric. Originally developed for military applications, this material effectively controls dielectric loss, reduces phase shift and RF interference, ensuring accurate, pure, and transparent signal transmission.
Furthermore, the Sarum T features the Super ARAY construction and RCA plug shells made of PTFE, which dampen resonance while enhancing connection stability and durability.
More Than an Upgrade: A Musical Rebirth
This visit was not just a follow-up service; it was a testament to the potential unlocked by upgrading a system’s critical components. The Sarum T is far more than a tonearm cable—it is a bridge that connects the emotion of the original recording to its playback. For vinyl enthusiasts pursuing ultimate performance, it is undoubtedly a worthwhile and essential upgrade.
