Titled \u201cOriginal Sound, Ultimate Reproduction\u201d, the Star Sound Harmony high\u2011end audio showcase\u2014hosted for the first time this year by Audio Technology\u2014successfully concluded last Saturday. The highlight of the event was the golden combination of the British SME Model 8 turntable and the British Chord Company PhonoARAY grounding system, paired with a Marantz LINK 10N preamplifier, dual Model 10 power amplifiers in Bi\u2011Amp configuration, B&W 801 D4 Signature loudspeakers, and Siltech cables. Together, they delivered two immersive sonic feasts rich in both analytical precision and musicality, allowing every participant to fully experience the allure of a high\u2011end audio system.<\/p>\n
The showcase was held at the B&W showroom in Ocean Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui. The room\u2019s acoustic absorption and diffusion design minimized environmental interference, ensuring the true performance of the equipment was fully revealed. At the venue, the SME Model 8 turntable and flagship Marantz audio system were displayed in an elegant and refined manner. The sleek, sophisticated chassis of the SME Model 8 blends industrial craftsmanship with aesthetic value, hiding numerous professional design details that make it a fine example of Britain\u2019s high\u2011end vinyl engineering. Positioned as a premium, advanced yet accessible model from SME, the Model 8 is far more than a simple parametric upgrade. It features comprehensive refinements in core structure, vibration control, and signal pickup, inheriting the brand\u2019s decades of vinyl tuning expertise while satisfying modern Hi\u2011Fi enthusiasts\u2019 dual demands for ultimate resolution and warm sound.<\/p>\n
Structurally, the SME Model 8 is built around three core components: the plinth, the platter, and the drive system\u2014each precision\u2011engineered and meticulously crafted. Its plinth is constructed from high\u2011density polymer and machined from solid material via CNC. Compared to the previous Model 6, the plinth weight is increased by 40%, greatly enhancing stability and effectively suppressing external vibration. Vibration control is critical to accurate vinyl reproduction, and the plinth\u2019s mass and material directly determine platter stability. The Model 8\u2019s weighted plinth, paired with four\u2011point suspension feet, isolates vibrations from the supporting surface and absorbs resonance generated by the turntable itself, laying a noise\u2011free foundation for accurate signal pickup.<\/p>\n

The separate external power supply features a clean speed selector knob and power switch for convenient operation while preserving the turntable\u2019s integrated design. The tonearm\u2019s straightforward calibration also offers room for upgrades and customization. As a high\u2011end yet accessible turntable, every detail of the Model 8 revolves around \u201cultimate reproduction\u201d\u2014from material selection and craftsmanship to vibration control and speed accuracy\u2014reflecting SME\u2019s relentless pursuit of vinyl fidelity and making it the centrepiece of the showcase.<\/p>\n
A major highlight of the demonstration was the synergy between the SME Model 8 and the Chord Company PhonoARAY turntable grounding system. Grounding quality directly affects the purity of vinyl sound. As an advanced independent filtering grounding solution, the Chord PhonoARAY provides precise grounding between the turntable and the phono stage or amplifier input, maximally isolating external noise interference\u2014key to the exceptionally pure sound at the event. During the showcase, Andy Yu demonstrated that without the PhonoARAY system, the turntable was vulnerable to environmental noise, with subtle background noise degrading vinyl reproduction. When connected, background noise was completely eliminated, allowing the authentic sound of vinyl to fully emerge. During the event, the organisers presented a diverse range of musical genres\u2014from gentle string pieces to powerful symphonic excerpts, rich vocal performances to intricate instrumental solos\u2014fully challenging the system\u2019s overall capabilities. As the stylus gently touched the vinyl and music flowed, the room fell silent. The highs were transparent yet smooth; delicate string overtones and harmonics were fully reproduced with clear detail and no harshness, thanks to the precise tracking of the SME Model 8 and the excellent resolution of the B&W diamond tweeter. The midrange vocals were full and warm, with realistic breath and articulation, as if the performers were right in front of the audience\u2014a realistic imaging made possible by the amplifiers\u2019 delicate amplification and Siltech\u2019s signal transmission. The bass was tight, authoritative, deep, and well\u2011controlled, with clear layers and agility whether from orchestral percussion or instrumental bass lines, never muddy or slow, demonstrating the system\u2019s outstanding dynamic control.<\/p>\n
Many seasoned audiophiles praised the system centred on the SME Model 8 turntable for balancing analytical performance and musicality.
